You might wonder what else you can do in the ever spectacular Fraser Island aside from traversing among the wild flora of its rainforests, swimming in the extra clear and clean lakes, getting face to face with dingoes and other wild animal species, taking a dip in its transparent creeks, visiting the colorful sand formations, be amazed by seeing thousands of birds, snorkeling with thousands of tropical fish, camping, visiting a shipwreck, and others.

These activities alone are more than you can ever imagine you can do in just one island. Certainly, this World Heritage Listed site won’t be a World Heritage site if it doesn’t offer anything more than amazing. If you think that’s all, Fraser Island still has a lot to offer in its buffet table of natural wonders.

Sports fishing is one of the fastest growing sports activity in Australia. Avid anglers are always up to the challenge of catching their most favorite fish. And sports fishing is another fun and exceptional way to experience the Fraser Coast.
Hervey Bay is considered the best area for fishing within the coast of Fraser. As a matter of fact, fishing is Hervey Bay’s best attraction. The water of the bay is home to a huge diversity of fish, most are the most coveted fish species of ardent anglers.

It is also a perfect location for an avid fisherman for a serious fishing expedition or a relaxing day at the idyllic coast for a family fishing trip.

Freshwater fishing in Fraser Island is strictly prohibited but anglers have the vast coast for them for sport fishing adventures. Taking a trip to the magnificent Hervey Bay for a half day or a full day trip will be a great chance to find and catch the most targeted fish.

Particular fish species especially the targeted once are seasonal. For example, the popular season for Golden Trevally fishing on flat boats is during October to March. Tunas and mackerels can also be seen during these warmer months.

Within December through April is the best season to catch tunas and mackerels depending on the water current and weather conditions which affects the appearance of fishes.

During the winter season, it is a perfect opportunity to reel in some Queenfish or Snappers. Fraser Island’s weather condition during winter is milder and it brings in the best water for Hervey Bay making it a good fishing season.

If fishing in the Fraser Island Sports Fishing is your plan for your next weekend fishing adventure, then Fraser Coast Sportfishing has a number of guided freshwater trips around Hervey Bay depending on the type of fish you will be after. The time of day will also be affected by particular fish species.

Fraser Coast Sportfishing will provide you with charter services which include a pick up and drop off at your respective accommodation. Here are some if the local fish species that you might want to know about which you will find in different areas.

Summer Whiting
This is one of the most popular fish in the Bay and one of the most favorite species of frequent anglers. The best months to spot and chance a good catch of this type of fish is during September to March.

Mackerel
Unknown to some, there are several mackerel species out there and some of the most common to Hervey Bay waters are the Broad Barred Mackerel and Spanish Mackerel which are really good eating fishes. September to May is the best Mackerel catching season.

Golden Trevally
Golden Trevally is also one of the most sought after fish species in Hervey Bay. They are a good fighting fish that’s why anglers should always be careful and wary of the odds of getting tangled up.

Queenfish
They are often seen during the winter season and also one of the most coveted fish species in the area. Between October and May is the time when this type of fish can be spotted in certain areas around the Bay.

Other fish species such as Australian Bass, Saratoga, Barramundi and other most valued species of fish are often the target of anglers.

Fraser Coast Sportfishing ensures that you are outfitted with quality fishing equipment and baits to make sure you have the best sportfishing experience in the Fraser Coast.

By Gail Forrer

Seriously successful eco-tourism operator the Discovery Group has built another road into Noosa by signing up two more international bus groups for stop overs.

And Discovery Group owner operator Wade Batty reckons they are in for an earthly feast.

“We wake up every morning with the world at our feet,” he said.

Wade and wife Kelly started their award-winning business some eight years ago and, in the face of huge industry challenges, such as a high Aussie dollar and cheap Asian holidays, they have not only grown, they have prospered.

Proudly, the couple offers premium four-wheel-drive discovery tours to World Heritage-listed Fraser Island and wilderness river cruises to the Noosa Everglades, and they are delighted their success spreads benefits across a range of Noosa businesses.

About three years ago, Wade secured a two day Noosa stopover by Contiki bus tours in its Sydney to Cairns run.

“They can bring up to 40 people a trip and stop in Noosa ix o eight times a month,” he said.

Last month, Mr Batty signed up COntiki tours for another two years and subsequently secured a similar arrangement with two more bus tours operators – Top Deck and AAT Kings. Their Noosa stopovers began this month.

The AAT Kings buses deliver both English and German-speaking tour groups to Noosa.

Mr Batty recently made a four-week business trip to Europe.

“It was to nurture the business relationship and put Noosa on the international map,” he said.

From kitchen hands to drivers and tour guides, the Discovery Group employs about 25 people. This month that number includes a German-speaking tour guide to cater for the AAT Kings tourists.

It is their job to ensure tourists have the best possible experience in what Wade calls the best place in the world.
“We have more bird life here than in Kakadu,” he said, “In 25 times smaller space.”

One of the best tourist activities in Fraser Island is bush walking. There are a lot of bush walking tracks around the island to explore the rainforest and visit the sand dunes, lakes, creeks and other areas of the sand island.

Fraser Island is home to over 100 lakes. There are three types of lakes that can be found in Fraser Island; the perched lakes, barrage lakes, and the window lakes. Among these are over 40 perched lakes that sum up more than half of the world’s total perched lakes. It is in Fraser Island where the world’s largest perched lake can be found too, which is Lake Boomanjin.

Basin Lake is considered a window lake. It was created by a natural depression of sand, exposing the water table. It is also one of the prettiest lakes in the island. It has no water inflow or outflow. Meaning, it only depends its water on rainfall. It covers an area only slightly larger than a football field and is 8m deep.

The bush walking tracks in Fraser Island are mostly sandy tracks with firm soil and stable surface. Some areas though are made up of soft sand which makes walking a bit tiring and slow. Also, tourists may come across steep slopes and some path obstacles such as fallen trees.

Included in the bush walking tracks are the chances to come face to face to some wildlife species which may startle several tourists. Dingoes and poisonous snakes are among the wildlife that one might encounter in a walk within the rainforest.

But don’t let these natural sightings and track conditions hinder your excitement and fun. This is part of the adventure. It is also important to know the walking track information to see if it suits your and your group.

Basin Lake bush walking track is one of the most exciting tracks in Fraser Island. Basin lake is located some 40 minutes walk from the Central Station. Since adventure in Fraser Island is not a real adventure without visiting the Central Station, the Basin Lake walking track lets tourist explore the Central Station and its towering trees and interesting, unique plant life.
The Basin Lake bush walking track will lead tourists through historic displays, old machinery and buildings via the access route within the rainforest to the wonderfully constructed boardwalk overlooking Wanggoolba Creek. It is a very idyllic place for the growth of unique plants.

Wanggoolba Creek is a shallow crystal clear creek that gently twists within the rainforest. Within the forest, tourist will have the chance to see unique plants such as strangler figs, piccabeen palms, vines and butterseed trees. Also, if tourists want to see the famous king fern that is Angiopteris evecta, this is the route to take as this is the only place in the island and in the world where the largest of the king fern grows.

The walk starts from the Wanggoolba Creek boardwalk and across the footbridge. Walk from Wanggoolba Creek and pass through the tall and towering kauri pines, brush box and eucalypt forest going towards the shores of Basin Lake the famous Basin Lake.

The walking track covers a distance of 5.6 kilometers. It is a half day walk that although duration is estimated between 2 to 2.5 hours, it varies among touring groups. While on track, don’t forget to rest and take meals. And sometime duration can be longer than the estimated time depending on the speed and the time spent by tourists by taking photos, resting, eating, and lingering on a particular awe inspiring spot.

During the walk, tourists will have the chance to meet and greet some rare frog species, piccabeen palms, see the beautiful clear and extra clean creek, the giant king fern, and subtropical and vine forests which is very unique to Fraser Island.
To get a chance to see plenty bird species, it is advisable to walk in the morning although the walk is pleasant any time of the year. Walking in the morning or late in the afternoon gives tourists the opportunity to escape the midday heat of the sun.
In just any walking track, always be dingo-safe and follow the guidelines. Since walking can be both fun and tiring, do not forget to bring enough drinking water and wear comfortable walking or running footwear.

Upon reaching the beautiful Basin Lake, although the water is so inviting, do not dive into it. It is also filled with small turtles that tourists can simple swim with. But in order to enjoy the turtles do not splash too much as this startles them and forces them to hide.

The plants and plant life in Fraser Island is quite unique and consists of different species. More than 865 species of plants are sustained by the island.

Fraser Island is a sand island, in fact the largest in the world. You can never find another place like the Fraser Island where lush rainforest practically grows on sand. It is nature’s wonderful irony that rainforest, filled with diverse and unique plant species healthily grows on its 1840 km2 sand area.

One might expect to see little or no plant life in a sand island but not the Fraser Island. Said to be containing more sand than the Sahara desert, it has a thick rainforest that makes this World Heritage site one of the most unique places in the world.

One of the trees that dominate in some areas of the island is the Kauri Pine. It is a large evergreen tree that grows straight up to as tall as 30-50 meters in height. Its bark is scaly but smooth. Its leaves are broad and thick that is 5 centimeters to 12 centimeters long. The leaves also have no midribs.

Due to the tough and straight trunks, giant Kauri pines in Fraser Island were heavily logged before. These types of trees that are gigantic in sizes along with Satinays, Black Butt trees, Cypress, Brush Box, are rare way back in the pre European times and they are of great use in building ships during the sailing periods.

Logging began in the 1860’s by fellers like Jack Piggot or known as Yankee Jack, the McKenzies’ and the Hines’ and it remained on Fraser Island in 1991 when the island was nominated as a World Heritage site. In 1992, when Fraser Island was declared a World Heritage site, logging was prohibited.

Some of the largest logs, especially the large trunks of the giant Kauri were used as to build boats and even sent to Egypt to use for the construction of the Suez Canal. Their huge trunks that are free of branches, as the branches are only limited to the top portions of the trees, made the Kauris precious timber for making great masts for ships back then.

Now that Fraser Island has transformed into a tourist site and preserved, giant Kauris can be seen towering among other trees in the rainforest.

The Giant Kauris form part of the Central Station’s surrounding forest where the tallest trees tower. Although much logging took place before it didn’t result for the Gaint Kauris to be extinct.

The Central Station Rainforest is stunning lush greenery where the giant kauris will make you feel minuscule under their trunks. Among the other trees such as the satinay, brush box, and piccabeen palms, the giant kauri pines towers them all. Walking along and among the brushes and tress of this rainforest will make you feel dwarfed within this natural wonderland.

The gigantic kauris’ tall trunks are straight and the branches only start near the top of the tree. Within the Central Station Rainforest, the dense kauris and other trees create a thick canopy above you that in some areas light couldn’t even penetrate.
The Central Station Rainforest got its name because it is the center of forestry in Fraser Island. When the logging was stopped two decades ago, the Central Station became a part of the rainforest and also the favorite destination of tourists for forest walks and picnics.

Fraser Island is really filled with natural wonders. From wildlife to clear water lakes, from sand dunes to rainforests, from shrubs to giant trees, Fraser Island has it all.

How can a 120 kilometer long and approximately 24 kilometers wide island that’s made up of sand can support vast rainforest, numerous wild animal species, and more than 100 lakes?

It’s quite a wonder how Fraser Island, known to be the world’s largest sand island, could contain as much as more than 100 freshwater lakes. Among these, over 40 are perched lakes. And Lake Boomanjin is the largest perched lake in Fraser Island as well as the largest perched lake in the world.

One might think that since the Fraser Island is made of sand, it couldn’t hold up much water as the water would eventually sink in the sand. But for Fraser Island to hold more than 40 lakes is quite fascinating and mysterious. These lakes and other freshwater bodies are some of the cleanest and purest in the world.

Not only that, Fraser Island is also home to vast rainforests and support several species of flora and fauna. Lakes and rainforests on sand is really something to wonder.

Lake Boomanjin, the world’s largest perched lake rests on the largest sand island in world. It is located in the east of Fraser Island, 22.05 kilometers Southeast of River Heads, 36.43 kilometers East of Maryborough and 38.53 kilometers North of Rainbow Beach. From Dilli Village, it is approximately 10 kilometers towards Northwest.

This largest perched lake covers an area of 200 hectares in size. There are only about a few dozen perched lakes all over the world. Fraser Island’s more than 40 perched lakes mostly cover half of the world’s total number.

For those who don’t know what a perched lake is, it is a body of water that rests above the groundwater level, approximately 100 meters, by a layer of rock, compacted sand, or organic matter that accumulated over the centuries, resulting to impermeable bases. The bases of these lakes in Fraser Island mostly consist of coffee rock or sand made watertight by the slowly rotting of reed humus, the reasons why the water doesn’t seep through quickly.

Perched lakes are mostly fed by rainwater. Fraser Island receives abundant rain that quickly makes up for the lost water from the lakes that seep away or those that evaporate.

In the case of Lake Boomanjin, its water is fed by two creeks that pass through a wallum swamp where tannins are collected. Tannins are responsible for the tint that makes the water of Lake Boomanjin reddish in color.

Tannins are results of decaying organic materials or vegetation in the creeks that feed Lake Boomanjin. Tannins leach out of the decaying matter that creates transparent acidic water yet tinted with a strain that looks more like tea.

Lake Boomanjin’s water is so pure and acidic like most perched lakes in Fraser Island. Therefore, hardly any life is supported by it. The high level of acidity prevents most species from finding it a good place to live.

Tent camping is permitted at the camping area around lake Boomanjin. However, there is no vehicular access therefore in order to reach the site campers must walk towards it.

With a 4WD the fenced campground shall be reached which is suitable for tent camping. It is in an open forest that’s between a car park area and the lake. It is located somewhere 15 kilometers north of Jabiru Swamp.

Lake Boomanjin campers will find facilities such as cold showers, a wash up bay, flushing toilet and picnic tables where they can have a good and relaxing time. It is not permitted to have an open fire but generators are available between 9am to 9pm that’s when everybody is expected to make minimal noises.

Fraser Island is a World Heritage listed location and is titled as the largest sand island in the world. Fraser Island is nothing but all the special things nature has to offer. It has everything from lush greens of the rainforests, exotic birds, clean freshwater lakes, white sand, colorful sand, whales, dolphins, turtles, fishes, sand dunes, shipwreck, dingoes, springs, snakes and a lot more.

Fraser Island is an ultimate paradise that you can’t resist to visit. It is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful natural places in the world.

Visiting and exploring the island requires certain precautions. Remember that Fraser Island is home to wild animals. It is also the home to the purest bred dingoes that are unique to the island. Everyone is expected to be cautious and abide to the rules and the warning placed around the island to remind tourists of what to do in such case that they come across wild animals.

Dingoes
Dingoes scatter around Australia. But the Fraser Island Dingoes are the purest of all the dingo breeds. They are wild, undomesticated, and their bloodline tells you that.

Fraser Island has about 120-150 population of dingoes that scatter around the island.

Do not ever forget that they are wild animals. They attack when they sense danger and when they feel that they are trapped. Dingoes are intelligent animals and after years of seeing visitors frequenting the island, they already have the knowledge that those bags and those tents have food. And they will go searching for them whether with or without your presence.

Dingoes have lost their natural fear of humans and they now see human as a bringer of stash of food. They get near humans because dingoes know that food is near them.

There have been reports about dingo attacks over the years and one was when a young boy was killed. Therefore, it is important not to provoke these animals and better stay away from them whenever they are seen to be lurking around because sometimes they come solitary, pair, or sometimes in packs.

Do not stroll at night, always close the tents, keep food away, and most especially keep a tight watch on children as they have a tendency to run towards the dogs to pet them.

Don’t feed them!
It is strictly necessary not to feed the dingoes. They are very common around the island and it may be a natural instinct to get near them and give them something to eat. But don’t get fooled by their cuteness!

Dingoes are scavenging for food all the time and they will not hesitate scavenging into your own stash. It is important to keep food inside cages within campsites and don’t ever bring food inside the tents because dingoes may tear tents apart just looking for the food. Also, don’t leave scraps behind.

Fish attracts dingoes every much. It is recommended to bury fish scraps deep into the sand to prevent dingoes from scavenging.

Wild Tides
Fraser Island is an untamed island. The waves can be harsh and the tides are

One of the most exciting ways to tour around the island is through a 4WD tour. With the car, either guided or tag-along self driven tour, tourists must be wary of the tide conditions in order to avoid accidents.

Ofcourse, driving along the beach is fun but timing when the tide rises or goes down is very important information because it happens a lot when tourists are suddenly engulfed by the ravaging waves to the shore.

Not knowing when the tide rises may put tourists in a critical situation. They may find themselves driving along low tide and all of sudden by smashed by waves. Sometimes, tourists may find it hard to get back to their site when the tide suddenly rises and they couldn’t drive themselves back.

Snakes and Others
Remember that Fraser Island is home to many wild things. The island is their home. One instinct of animals is protect their territory and aggressively attack when provoked.

One of the wild things tourists fear of is the snakes. Fraser Island is home to a number of poisonous snakes. But that’s not something to be really scared about.

Snakes are afraid of humans more than human are afraid of them. Fraser Island snakes, even the most poisonous ones, are extremely shy. They immediately go towards the opposite direction, hide, and stay away from humans and their sounds once they hear humans approaching. They don’t suddenly attack. Once they hear loud footsteps and voices, they will immediately run away.

But if snakes are seen on your path, don’t ever get near them. Just walk along by as if you don’t see them there. They won’t even bother let you know of their presence in case you don’t say G’day to them.

Of course, they are cases where tourists have been bitten by snakes. But most of the incidents happen after the tourists try to kill the snakes.

So as a rule, just leave the snakes alone.

Aside from the shy snakes, tourists may come across other animals. Poisonous spiders are also on the list. It is quite easy to get yourself bitten if you ever want to but staying away from them, not disturbing their holes or webs will get you away from harm.

There are still a lot of animals in the island and they are more beautiful than they are scary. So, to enjoy a stay in Fraser Island, don’t ever provoke the wild animals, and stay safe. Anyway, the island is their territory. Just leave them alone, take the precautionary actions, and you’ll be alright.

There are several ways of touring the Fraser Island and having the island’s ultimate wildlife experience. Having a day tour will let tourists see the most popular sites. But staying for at least two nights will really let one experience how it is to be in nature and take in the beauty of it.

Fraser Island has a lot to offer and has a lot of things waiting for tourists to explore and not anyone would like to miss just one exciting part of it.

Camping in the island’s designated camping grounds is a great choice if you really want to get the island feel. There are some restrictions that you must abide with to avoid accidents. Remember that you will be in the wilderness.

Vehicle Permit
You cannot go to Fraser Island unless you have a vehicle access permit. It is necessary to accomplish a vehicle access permit beforehand as this will also be provided together with the information pack that will be given to you before you head off to the island. So it is better to secure the permit and never lose it.

What to Pack

Luggage and bags
You will be camping so don’t bring a trunk. A backpack is the ideal thing to carry with you. Leave your extra luggage at the mainland or at the resort accommodation and just bring a bag to carry enough things for camp.

Clothing
You would like to take a waterproof jacket with you. It is great to protect yourself from rain or showers especially when traversing through the rainforest.

Just wear anything that makes you comfortable. Jeans, shorts, whatever that may make you climb easily. Comfortable and warm clothes are great to protect you from cold nights especially during winter periods.
Cap or hat is advisable to protect your heads and faces. A good pair of UV protect sunglasses will be enough to protect your eyes.

Toiletries and other supplies
Bring only the essential supplies. You will have to bring the basic things such as sunscreen, toothpaste and toothbrush, insect repellent, toilet paper, etc. You will be on a camp so don’t bring excess baggage. If you want to take all the resort convenience then don’t go camping at all. After all, its camping in the wild.

Bringing some basic medicine is also advisable like aspirin for minor headache. A small first aid kit would be great and also a necessity. But if you are with a group, one first aid kit would be enough. Each of you doesn’t have to bring ne and don’t bring a whole hospital medical supply. Because if there will be serious injuries, you will just have to head back to the mainland.

Towels
A small bath towel (not the extra large ones you use in your home), and a couple of small face towels (to wipe off perspiration etc) would be enough to give you comfort and convenience.

Camping Gear
Don’t forget your tent. Or else you will be camping in the open or not allowed to be camping at all. Sleeping bags and a lamp will be necessary. A flashlight will be very handy as well.

These things, along with some cooking gear will be provided to you. So you don’t really have to worry about these things if you don’t personally have them.

Don’t forget you Camera!
That’s pretty understandable why you have to. You don’t want every single moment pass in Fraser Island without taking pictures. Lots of pictures!

It is a very mystical and wonderful place that you’re crazy if you don’t take any picture even just a photo of your feet in sand.

The bushes, the trees, the leaves, especially the wonderful locations, wild animals, and everything about the island is simply picture perfect.

Since you will be taking a lot of photos, bring a lot of film and extra SD cards in case you run out of space.

Pack Light and Complete
Resort shops in the island offer their products very costly. So you want to check your things and make sure you have everything you need if you don’t want to spend dollars on an overpriced towel. There are no other shops n the island aside those owned by the resorts so you have to expect that prices are quite different than those at the mainland.

Bring only those that you need. It’s great to bring extra but not so much that it’s like you’ve taken your whole home supplies with you.

When going to Fraser Island be prepared, be safe, and (as if you’ll forget about it) have fun.
